Wendee Yudis is a Serigraph Mixed Media Artist whose paintings and prints have been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries in NYC, Chicago, and Philadelphia since the mid-1990s.

She received an MFA in Printmaking and Painting from Pratt Institute and BFA in Printmaking and Photography from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She also studied archaeology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and photography at Richmond College in London.

"My art turns the definition of femininity on its head.

It examines and questions women’s roles in the world as dictated by social constructs: the ones imposed upon us – obedient child, wife, and daughter – and the ones we step into voluntarily – boss, lover, and vixen.

I use humor to explore the depths of these ideas. Womanhood cannot and should not be confined to one definition. Why do we have to be vixens or victims? Can we be both? My work explores the paradox of the powerful vs. the powerless in a manner that is both playful and sexual. The women in my work become icons who reoccur in different contexts and combinations. In this way, my work is layered with meaning. I look at the words we use to define masculinity and femininity and play with typography and context. For example, why is a bossy man synonymous with executive leadership while a bossy woman is a bitch? My bold and graphic treatment of words amplifies my ideas and by questioning the many facets of women, I embrace the freedom and power within every woman."

Apply April Online Group Show!

While ”Flower Power” was a slogan used by Hippies opposing the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 70s America, we want to use it to celebrate Flowers & Art in our April online group art show.

Throughout history, humans have used flowers to communicate their emotions and to commemorate various occasions. Still-life paintings of wilting flowers were meant to capture the fleeting nature of human life. In France and England, the aristocrats covered their palaces with floral wallpaper.

Botanical illustrations brought art and science together dating this art practice to the 1st Century B.C. In the Victorian era, the Pre-Raphaelite artists filled their paintings with hidden botanical symbolism. And we shall not forget Vincent Van Gogh’s iconic sunflowers.

Flowers have a lot of other historical significance across the globe so to welcome the arrival of Spring our April online group art show celebrates flowers. We welcome artworks depicting Flowers from all mediums of visual art, except video/film.

HMVC's March tips for Artists

"Call for Art" tips that the PROS use.

It can be difficult to have your artwork accepted for a show. You never know what the gallery is really looking for and most of them don’t provide you with feedback. So how can you better your chances of being selected?

First of all, follow the guideline to the T. You would be amazed how many submissions we get that don’t provide us with an Artist Bio and Statement, or they give us poor quality images OR they don’t follow the theme. Which means they get disqualified immediately. So here are 3 things you need to pay attention to when submitting:

✨Artist Bio and Statement: This is your elevator pitch. Tell the gallery what your art is about, what you are about. Your qualifications and experience level. Introduce the audience to your art.

✨4k ie High definition pictures of your artwork: This one is a big one. When you upload your pictures they have to look professional. Meaning nothing in the background (kids playing, messy studio etc), bad lighting, weird angle etc. Crop and adjust the image accordingly. And if your work is 3D, take the photo against a white background and in good lighting.

✨Theme Theme Theme: Most galleries want their Group Shows to depict a theme, so do it. If the theme is Love, give them work that best reflects Love. At HMVC Gallery New York we make cheeky exceptions sometimes when an artist had decided to go against the theme, but they managed to explain in their Artist Statement why they did that. However most galleries want the artists to follow their theme, so do that.

We hope that with these 3 tips in your bag, you can start increasing your chances of being selected for the shows you want.
