Emily L. Joseph and Alicia Tubbs solo shows & May call for art

Emily L. Joseph

Emily L. Joseph, our VR Solo Castle Artist, and her virtual solo show is currently running on our Website.

"My paintings began to unravel and reveal the silence, the fright, and the tribulations throughout childhood to the end of a destructive marriage. The screams never heard, the tears never seen, the fear not shown, constant fear, the shame of body and mind. My paintings then became the venue for my self-liberation. My art depicts the evolution from childhood terrors to adult recovery and brings light to the darkness. In addition, there is growth in my work, reflecting the joy found in other areas of my life. My art was reclusive and hidden for years. During the isolation of COVID, I began to paint again with zealousness and ease and found a genuine newness and expression to my work that began to sing. I found my voice and soul again in painting. Emergence began and exposure of my art was welcoming."

"I have been drawing and painting since I was 4 years old. It gave me the ability to escape and express myself in safe imagery. I love the use of lines, centering on the thought that the shortest distance between two spots is a straight line. Gesture drawings, gave the line give movement and scribbles could become a pattern to dances. The core of my work focuses on color and the use of color theory such as illumination, complimentary colors, and the subtractive method. Through observation, I found that if I placed a black box on a page, it became stagnant – a black box. However, when I drew a jagged red line through the box, it became dynamic, a new form of energy. When painting, I develop a series of works either similar in color, expression, or design. While in the past I have worked with an extensive palette, I find in my current work the restriction of a palette more appealing to my method. Since Graduate School (Rochester Institute of Technology – MFA), I follow T. S. Elliot’s Objective Correlative. This is a means of expressing emotion in art by using either set of objects, a situation, or a chain of events. Through this method, the painting becomes that emotion. My style leans towards abstract painting because it supplies the necessary tools to allow the portrayal of thoughts and emotions in work. In my work, I do not dictate the emotion found in my paintings; but leave it for the viewer’s own discovery and interpretation. This work subjective in nature utilizes color to illustrate feelings and dreams, and with each piece, there is an underlying core of darkness and a definite area of light. This draws the eye over the piece to the core. The lines keep the eyes moving, while the dots scream, “look at me”.The work ranges in size from small works on paper to 48x48 inches on canvas. With each piece, there is an underlying core of what could be construed as darkness and a definite area of lightness.” The exchange between colors, lines, and shapes tell my story."

Solo Show by Alicia Tubbs

We are happy to announce that Alicia Tubbs, our 2nd Solo Show winner from "Women" premiers her Show today and the show runs between April 16 - 30th.

You can view the show on our Website and Virtual Gallery.

Unlike many artists, Alicia Tubb's art career began later in life. It wasn't until she was gifted a watercolor set by her daughter on her 51st birthday that she realized her love for painting. From that day forward she has devoted herself to learning all she can and developing her creative skills.

Alicia is a storyteller at heart. Stories of hidden places shared and inner beauty revealed spring up in her imagination. Providing visual tales that beg for interpretation is her aim. The subjects that she chooses are linked together in unique relationships. Do they hold a secret that only the two of them know? Possibly one holds the key to a valued treasure or the key to another's freedom. Peppering symbolism into each painting only adds to its significance. This is also true for the abstracts in her portfolio. For example, there is intentionality to develop depth while allowing the first layer of texture to peek through the final layer. This could point to a heart with many layers that can only be seen and appreciated by those who are willing to take the time.

Congratulations Alicia and please enjoy her show everyone!

May Online Group Show!

Abstract painting has been hailed as a celebration of the activity of the painting itself.

Pioneered by Hilma af Klint and Vassily Kandinsky and later perfected by American artists, boldness and experimentation with color are used to describe Abstract art as it is free from the rules of traditional form-focused art practices.

Abstract art’s key elements are the symbolic function of color, the rhythm of forms, and their independence from a subject, resulting in the artist having complete autonomy to express their emotions and showcase their artistic abilities without restrictions.

In the viewer Abstract art is meant to evoke emotions and reactions, so we can come to the conclusion that abstract art is ultimately incredibly flexible in its most basic form.

This time in our April online group art show we celebrate Abstract art. We welcome Abstract artworks from all mediums of visual art, except AI-created art and video/film.
